How to make 3D gingerbread Christmas cookies
Watch this video to go a good overview of how to brand the 3D cookies. Photos and more detailed instructions follow.
Nosotros used the "White Business firm Gingerbread" recipe found hither. I made a half batch and that was plenty to brand nigh 24 3D cookies. You could as well use a saccharide cookie recipe, such equally this one: Saccharide cookies with foam cheese frosting. I would Non recommend using the sugar cookie dough that comes in a tube at the store, as I've found that it doesn't concur information technology'south shape when baked. You really desire to use a dough that won't spread as well much during baking (that generally means a fairly potent dough).
Footstep 1: Start by mixing upwards your cookie dough. On a cookie sail liner or piece of parchment newspaper, scroll some of the dough out in a large rectangle, sprinkling with flour as needed. Try to fill up the entire cookie canvass liner, and coil the dough to virtually i/eight inch to 1/four inch thick.
Step 2: Start cutting cookie pieces with your cookie cutters, but leave the cutting cookies on the liner! Brand sure you leave space in between the cookies equally you lot cutting (as you come across below) and be sure to cutting out both pieces (or all three pieces) for each cookie you lot'd like to make. Then remove the backlog dough, or "trash", from around the pieces y'all cut out. I used a toothpick to help pick upward the excess dough and remove it. Continue until just the cookie pieces are left on the liner:
Annotation: This method is astern from how I normally cut cookies. Withal, since these cookies are fairly detailed, it's easier not to take to motion them from counter to cookie canvas once they are cut out.
Step 3: Slide the cookie sheet liner onto a cookie sail and bake the cookies until they are cooked through and the edges starting time to feel firm. For the gingerbread recipe I linked above, they baked at 375 degrees for most 8 minutes.
Step 4: If any of the notches have filled in during baking, use a abrupt knife to cutting them straight over again. Practise this immediately later on removing from the oven – it's much easier to cut them while they are warm. The notches don't need to be huge; ideally they should only be about every bit wide as the cookies are thick.
At this point yous tin can let all your cookie pieces absurd completely.
In one case cool, you lot tin can decorate and assemble your 3D cookies. I kept decorations very elementary for these photos, but my kids went to town decorating their cookies. Information technology was almost as fun as decorating gingerbread houses!
For the reindeer, I merely added a mini M&M nose and a few stripes of white frosting to look like reins. For the snowman, I used pull apart Twizzlers for a scarf. And for the Christmas tree, I outlined it with white frosting and added a star sprinkle on summit.
Pretty cute, right?
Ane last tip – when you open up your cutters, some of the notches may await very wide. If they do, only pinch them together so that the notches are straight and the ii edges are parallel to ane another.
Happy holiday blistering!
